[Autism Society Greater Tucson] Re: iCare for Autism

Hi all,

I just dropped off some gently used trains and tracks at Andrea and Mike's house for Saturday's yard sale and fundraising event.  They are gathering together a lot of great toys and other things. They have formed a 501(c) to provide free ipads to those living with autism. Electronic media is an oft preferred method of learning and communication for people with autism and there is research showing the immediate benefits in developing independent skills as well as behavioral ands social development in the way ipads provide typing power to those graphically-challenged, concrete manipulation of visual symbols, reading and icon recognition, video modeling (learning from watching behavior 2D, organization, academic skills, research skills and even communicating with peers.   The rewarding part is that the reward of using media is already built in to the learning. And they seem to be glued to most kids' pockets anyway so practicing all these skills takes place 24/'7.  Don't take it from me (as if), but from Lois Jean Brady, M.A., CCC-SLP author of APPS for Autism: An Essential Guide to over 200 Effective Applications for Improving Communication, Behavior, Social Skills and more!

Results and food for thought pulled from a variety of research articles:

"Parents tend to consider that their children are mainly self-taught and underestimate their own role in supporting learning and the extent to which learning with technology is culturally transmitted within the family."

"Support tools—Apps have been developed for students with autism for schedules, timers, symbols and ABA instruction."

"Also these new tablets and communication Apps may appeal to families of very young children, individuals with autism and others who may not traditionally have thought about AAC. AAC may also become an option sooner, because of the affordability and the accessibility of communication Apps. Also, because these technologies are multi-functional, their appeal is enhanced because they offer ongoing access to information, social interactions, entertainment, music and games."

Wishing good luck for a great turn out, a wonderful cause and lots of techno-saavy kiddos in Tucson.  :-)

iCare for Autism is a Tucson based Non Profit that is working to get iPads into the hands of children on the Autism spectrum.  We are raising funds by collecting donations and used but good working order iPads.  You can get more info by visiting our website icareforautism.org or our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/icareforautism.org
We are also having a fundraiser yard sale this next Saturday April 28th to help with the fundraising.  We are looking for families to help with the yard sale (its on the east side), to donate items for the yard sale, and for people to spread the word.  All donations are tax deductible and we can give donation receipts.
If you know of a family that has a child on the Autism spectrum that would benefit from receiving an iPad and autism related apps that cant afford one please visit our site for more info on how to apply.
We are hoping to see more children benefitting from what iPads can do for the autism community.
You can contact us through email, facebook or through the webpage.

Thank you,
